Need Advice On Free Antivirus Programs
«

I had to get rid of nod32 on my Windows XP Service Pack 3 computer because I could no longer afford the paid subscription on it so I had to go to a free antivirus program.
I tried Avast Antivirus but I found it to be too clunky and excessively memory intensive. I presently have Avira Antivirus 10 on my computer but I have manually update it because it won't automatically update (My firewall is Zone Alarm Pro and it is set to allow Avira to access the Internet.).
Does anyone have advice on what free antivirus programs might work for my computer that will automatically update and won't be too memory intensive?
Thanks.

Bill,
Take a look at AVG free, which I've used on a number of XP installations both virtual and real metal - several along with ZoneAlarm. I've recently helped a friend set up Microsoft Security Essentials, and was quite impressed with that application.

It's gotten some good reviews that I've seen. Certain competitors are not pleased with Microsoft offering this for free, especially in OS updates...

See the Windows SIG Forum link below for several good free Anti-Virus programs:
